Growth - Breaking the Pattern

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr M. Eteuati.

Have you ever drawn something in combination or repeatedly that looks like a tatau(tattoo), Tapa cloth or Cultural design, but you never really understood the origins or significance of those symbols you created? Would you like to understand more about those symbols and patterns and have the opportunity to create your very own? Would you like to create a unique pattern that is a beautiful expression of yourself and your own stories, which can be carved into wood, painted, printed, and then worn or displayed with pride for others to appreciate? It is time to break the pattern and share your stories in your own way-create your own personalised flag, shirt, ie lavalava, or modern version of a tapa cloth using traditional and modern Art tools. This course is focused on pattern research, concept development and final production. This will involve you learning about a variety of Artworks from Pacific and Western contemporary Artists that have been inspired by patterns; creating your very own symbols/patterns that are significant to you and presenting them in a way that enhances your stories.

You will: Study existing symbols and patterns within traditional and contemporary Pacific artforms. Learn about a range of formal elements in Art and their application that are relevant to this project. Develop painting, printmaking , digital and hand-drawn skills. Write about the significance of your symbols and patterns. Create an Art portfolio, which will include your symbol studies, pattern concepts and completed works. Prepare a method of presenting and communicating your body of work.
