Course Description

Aotearoa is an insignificant country at the bottom of the world, yet it has played a significant role in some world affairs. In this course we will learn about Aotearoa’s role on the world stage in such areas as:
- The United Nations: the setting up of, collective security, role on the Security Council, peacekeeping.
- Wars in Asia in the 1950s,1960s: the Korean War, the Vietnam War and debate
- The Nuclear Issue of the 1950s—1990s: Nuclear Testing in the Pacific, Nuclear ship visits, The Rainbow Warrior, nuclear policy impact.
- The Politics and Sport controversy: The rugby debate and its impact on the 1976 Olympics.
- The Refugee Situation: WWII refugees/Polish Children, Asian War casualties, Afghani Refugees- The Tampa incident.
- Prime Ministers on the World Stage: Peter Fraser, Norman Kirk, Robert Muldoon, David Lange, Helen Clark.
