Growth - Indigenous Rights

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs K. Taranaki, Ms M. Malpas.

For far too long, the rights of Indigenous peoples around the world have been ignored and denied - Indigenous Rights are Human Rights.

This course aims to explore the actions of different Indigenous cultures and the choices people have made in asserting and defending their rights and identity in their own country. You will learn the importance of historical perspective and bias in determining how sovereignty and/or moves towards independence were viewed by the different groups in society. By comparing and contrasting the treatment of Tangata Whenua in Aotearoa with other Pasifika nations; Hawai'i, Tonga, Samoa and Niue, by European colonial powers you will recognise the significance and meaning of Ngapuhi rangatira Tamati Waka Nene's plea to his people...
